Website Statement - Protest Against Climate Change

12 March 2019

As you may be aware, there was a protest against climate change organised in February affecting a number of schools in the area. We understand that there will be another event on Friday where students will look to take action by protesting in Newcastle.

We are aware that a number of students feel strongly about this cause, and more generally, encourage students to become involved in topical issues, expressing their views through appropriate channels. However, we will not be able to authorise absence for this action on Friday for the following reasons:

  • As the students will not be in school, we would be unable to ensure their safety.
  • We feel the protest could detrimentally affect the students from an academic perspective at such a critical time with a matter of weeks of teaching before final examinations begin.
  • We anticipate that this could cause disruption to lessons for teachers and students who remain in school.

As the school is sympathetic to the reasons behind the protest, we will be making a donation towards appropriate charities that support this cause. We will also look to further expand the provision of this topic as part of the Assembly Programme across the school, in the PHSCE Programme in lower school, and the Tutorial Programme in Sixth Form. This issue is clearly relevant to young people at Gosforth Academy and will therefore continue to be covered.

Finally, we would support appropriate action that students may wish to take, including writing letters to relevant Members of Parliament that would cause less disruption to their education and their aim of achieving the best set of results possible.

Thank you for your continued support.
