Principal's Newsletter

24 May 2019

We have come to the end of this short and very busy half term. Year 11 GCSE exams are well underway and we are delighted with the overall effort and attitude the students have shown in the early days of the examinations. It is good to see them increasing their effort and momentum in their studies at the most intense period of their education to date.

We said goodbye to our Year 11’s yesterday in a lovely leaver’s assembly and we wish them all the best in the rest of their exams and in their next steps. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all Year 11 parents for their continued support of the school over the last 5 years and for your attendance at events which has been invaluable.

From now on Y11 will only need to come into school for timetabled lessons where external examinations are yet to be undertaken, the additional pre-exam revision classes for subjects with remaining examinations and any remaining examinations. If students have completed all assessed elements of a course (examination and coursework) then they will no longer need to attend lessons in that subject. Please continue to help us by ensuring your child is in full school uniform and has the appropriate equipment necessary for every exam.

We also have a programme of revision sessions running over the half term holiday which you can find below.

Young journalists

The school is very excited to have had the opportunity to write a two-page ‘Our School’ editorial about North Gosforth Academy which will be published in the Evening Chronicle on Thursday 6 June. This is a fantastic opportunity for the school to celebrate the achievements of students and show off our wonderful school to the wider community.

The nine articles that make up the ‘Our School’ feature have all been written by our students. The ten students (from Years 7, 8 and 9) spent a day planning, writing and editing the articles which cover a range of topics including sporting successes and trips as well as an interview with myself.

The students involved had a fantastic day and produced some excellent pieces of writing for the Evening Chronicle.

Athletics Success

A number of our Year 7 and 8 students were selected to go forward to the North West of North Tyneside district athletic championships yesterday where they competed against George Stephenson, Longbenton, Churchill and Burnside high schools.

The standard was impressive with the top 3 from each event being picked to represent the North West area in the North Tyneside games which will be held at Monkton Stadium on the 5 June. At this event students will compete to be selected to represent North Tyne in the Northumberland championships.

Our students all did really well and 8 students qualified to the next stage.

Y10 mock exams

We would like to make you aware that our practice exams for Y10 will take place during the week of 24th June 2019.

These exams provide an invaluable opportunity for students to focus on their exam performance and to assess their progress at this crucial mid-point of their GCSE study.  This will also enable a focus point for the revision process and intervention programme in preparation for the Year 11 GCSE period.

Your child will receive their individual examination timetable for the practice exams in the first week back after half term and I ask that you ensure they work hard at their revision throughout this period.  Students will receive further guidance in registration on how to study in preparation and will have revision resources made available to them.

Parents Forum

I’d like to remind parents that we have our next Parent’s Forum on Monday 3 June at 6pm. We would love to see you there, if you plan to attend please email Mrs Davies on beth.davies@northgosforth.co.uk.

I wish you all a lovely half term break, let’s hope the sun keeps shining!
