We are now half way through the first half-term and students have settled back well.

China Trip

I'd like to start by updating you on the China trip that students went on at the end of last term. We took 20 students to Beijing where they experienced many different cultural events including a Chinese Tea Ceremony, calligraphy class and circus shows. All our students were brilliant at eating traditional Chinese cuisine and we got to visit many great places including Tiananmen Square, The Forbidden City, The Summer Palace, The Temple of Heaven and, of course, the Great Wall of China.

Our students did the school proud and were great ambassadors for the United Kingdom in China!

Newcastle Trip

Today our Year 7 students have all been out on a trip into Newcastle city centre to give them the opportunity to sample some of the cultural aspects which make Newcastle such a wonderful city. Students had a fun packed day including a Kung Fu demonstration, a tour of the Newcastle Keep to discover it's hidden past, a visit to the Newcastle Quayside and an open topped bus tour around the city centre. I will update you with photos and more details in the next newsletter.

Author Visit

We kicked the new academic year off with an amazing opportunity for our Year 7 students to meet, greet, buy and get books signed by a great, up and coming, children’s author Aisha Bushby.  They enjoyed a fantastic interactive presentation, in which they were able to get involved in developing the setting, characters and premise of a video game – really exciting and challenging stuff.  This was a great way to introduce our new students to the importance of literacy within the curriculum of the school, and hopefully this will lead to a love of reading which will last a lifetime.

Absence Procedures – Reminder

Can I remind all parents that it is their responsibility to inform school if their child is going to be absent and that this must be done on a daily basis until the child returns to school. If a student is off for three or more consecutive days, or if a student has attendance that is below 90% then the school will require medical evidence to authorise the absence. Without this evidence the absence will be marked as unauthorised which will put families at risk of legal action from the local authority.

Any student with 5 days of unauthorised absence in a year and who’s attendance is below 90% will be placed on a legal monitoring period which may result in a fine from the local authority if attendance does not improved during this period.

The number to report an absence is 0191 236 1704. If you have any queries on attendance issues then please contact Mrs Hay or Mrs Foulkes-Jones to discuss.

Newcastle United Foundation

North Gosforth Academy are delighted to announce that we will once again be partnering up with the Newcastle United Foundation. Each week, Adam Clark from the Foundation will be working in school offering a series of projects and activities to all year groups. These activities include a 5-a-side programme for Year 8, a Sports Leaders Programme during Thursday enhancement as well as support for our Year 7's in the form of a transition project.

In addition, the Foundation has already been able to offer some stunning prizes to students with Caitlin Dunn in Year 7 winning the opportunity to be a mascot at Saturday's match between Newcastle and Brighton. Well done Caitlin!

Last week the Winners for the Northumbria area FutureMe Enterprise Challenge 2019, in association with the Newcastle United Foundation, received their ASDAN certificates. FutureMe have now commissioned an artist and work has begun on bringing the students’ storyboard ideas to life.

We can't wait to share more about the exciting projects as the year goes on.

Open Evening

We had a fantastic Open Evening this week where prospective new parents had the chance to see our wonderful school. We are especially proud of our students who gave up their time to help out on the evening and were a credit to the school.
