PE

Intent
At GJHA we aim to promote a high-quality physical education curriculum which inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in both competitive and non-competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. Our vision is to provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.


Implementation

Key Stage 2 pupils are taught to:

  • Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
  • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
  • Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]
  • Perform dances using a range of movement patterns
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
  • Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best
  • Pupils will attend weekly swimming lessons for one full term in both year 5 and year 6.


Key Stage 3 pupils are taught to:

  • Use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby and tennis]
  • Develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports [for example, athletics and gymnastics]
  • Perform dances using advanced dance techniques in a range of dance styles and forms
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activities which present intellectual and physical challenges and be encouraged to work in a team, building on trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group
  • Analyse their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best
  • Take part in competitive sports and activities outside school through community links or sports clubs

Year 7

During the year pupils continue to develop on all of the skills they have mastered in Key Stage 2. They have been involved in a broad and balanced PE programme and have participated in a range of activities that further promote physical skilfulness and development through indoor and outdoor activities. Pupils can now use target setting to help improve performance.
Pupils take part in physical activities that involve; competing with and outwitting opponents, e.g. football and netball, accurate replication of actions, e.g. gymnastics, optimum performance, e.g. athletics, and creative problem solving.

Year 8

During the year pupils continue to develop on all of the skills they have mastered in Year 7. They have been involved in a broad and balanced PE programme and will have participated in a range of activities that promote physical skilfulness and development through indoor and outdoor activities. Pupils continue to use target setting to help improve performance.

Pupils take part in physical activities that involve; competing with and outwitting opponents, e.g. rugby and basketball, accurate replication of actions, e.g. dance/gymnastics, optimum performance, e.g. athletics, and creative problem solving.

Impact
A broad and balanced PE curriculum is delivered to provide the best opportunity for all pupils to lead active, healthy lifestyles.  Within Key Stage 2 all pupils receive at least one lesson per week with a specialist physical education teacher. This enables subject specific expertise in developing motor skills together with a progressive introduction for pupils into competitive sports.  Opportunity to participate and compete is evident throughout the curriculum. 

Year 7 pupils should be confident in terms of exercising safely and effectively to improve health and wellbeing. Pupils have opportunities to represent the school in a range of sports.

Year 8 pupils can now plan small games and activities and are able to coach and lead others in their learning. By the end of the Year 8 pupils are more confident in terms of exercising safely and effectively to improve health and wellbeing. Pupils have opportunities to represent the school in a range of sports.
