We begin our KS4 at the start of Year 9.  Students will follow Algebra and Number for the whole of year 9.  In year 10 all students will follow Data Handling and then Shape & Space.  Year 11 is our intervention year, where we revisit topics and extend understanding as well as identifying whole class and individual issues based upon continual assessment in year 11.

Course Description

The GCSE course began in Year 9 and continues throughout Year 10 and Year 11.  Students will be the second cohort to experience examination in the new Mathematics GCSE, which will be more demanding for all students.

A brief overview of some of the changes:

  • the volume of subject content has increased
  • the demand of that content has increased too, with harder topics for both Foundation and Higher students
  • all exams will be sat at the end of the course and will have a total time of 4.5 hours
  • students will be graded from 9 to 1, replacing A* to G grades
  • Foundation papers are graded 1 to 5 and Higher Papers graded 4 to 9
  • there is a greater emphasis on reasoning and problem solving

Throughout the course students will study Number, Algebra, Geometry and Measures, Statistics and Probability, Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change.

Students should experience a wide range of teaching and learning styles throughout their  GCSE years with work matched to their ability.  The maths department regularly uses interactive and fun activities to engage students, and is keen on using ICT wherever  appropriate.

Having achieved superb results in previous years the department is always keen to improve further. Regular intervention is common in the department both within lessons and outside.  Revision classes, booster sessions, small group catch-up and peer mentoring are just a few of the things offered to ensure students maximise their potential.  Parents information evenings are also held in Year 11 to help parents best support their child in the external examination.  All teachers are also available to support students before and after school.

We are now following an AQA scheme of work - AQA GCSE Mathematics 8300.

It is very likely that we would enter them for this exam board but that may be subject to change.
