Year 9:

In Year 9 students are taught a series of skills to prepare them for GCSE Science.  This includes preparatory work for their Controlled Assessments and an exposure to practical techniques.  Students are taught in mixed ability groups. From Christmas work will start on the GCSE course. Students remain mixed ability until the timetable roll over in May when they are broadly banded. At Gosforth, students follow the AQA trilogy course.

Year 10 & Year 11:

Course Leader: Mr Simpson

All students will study Combined Science with topics drawn from Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This leads to two GCSEs in Science.  We are following the AQA “Trilogy” course.

Triple Science

A number of students will be selected to do Triple Science.  The course is taught in the same time as Combined Science so students are selected based on their ability to undertake the more intensive study involved.  Those doing Triple Science cover some extra topics in addition to the Combined Science work, leading to a GCSE in each of the subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Triple and Combined Science both offer a progression route to A levels and equivalent qualifications in science subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Applied Science.

All of the awards are assessed by external exams.  These exams also test students’ understanding of practical work carried out in various parts of the GCSE teaching.

All science GCSEs will be graded on the new 9-1 scale.
All students start work on the GCSE course  in Year 9.  The results in unit tests and the end of year exam will help to inform the selection of the Triple Science cohort later in the course.

All courses are fully supported by the Internet and textbooks.  There is also a large input from current news stories from the press and television.
