Curriculum Overview

The North Gosforth Academy Curriculum is balanced and broadly based; promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of our students and of society; and prepares our students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. 

The curriculum at NGA includes:

  • opportunities for students to acquire and develop skills in speaking and listening, literacy, numeracy and ICT;
  • personal, social, health and citizenship education, reflecting the Academy's aims and ethos; this includes an emphasis on community cohesion and British Values
  • spiritual, moral and religious education;
  • appropriate IAG (careers guidance);
  • appropriate programmes of study and support for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities;
  • enterprise and vocational education.

Subjects Offered

KS3                       

The KS3 curriculum is designed to give Y7 & 8 students a challenging and stimulating beginning to their secondary education.  The curriculum builds upon skills and knowledge gained in KS2 ensuring continuity and progression in transition from primary school.

KS4                    

In KS4 (Y9 – 11) students have the opportunity to study for a range of Level 1 and 2 qualifications. All students study for GCSEs in English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Science, as well as Core PE and PSHCE, and can choose option subjects from a broad range of additional Level 2 option courses.       

KS5                   

KS5 provision is based at Gosforth Academy with the exception of the VTCT Beauty Therapy course

Option Systems

At the end of Key Stage 3 (Summer Term of Y8) students are guided to choose 4 option subjects appropriate to their abilities and interests from a range on offer at Key Stage 4.

In addition, students also choose a one year option that is studied in year 9 only and then assessed and certified at the end of the year. The key principles here are that students:

  • experience success and enjoyment on an intensive, accredited course
  • develop skills that help them prepare for them for the demands of KS4                       

Enhancement Curriculum

In addition to the formal curriculum, students have the opportunity to pursue interest courses in their fortnightly enhancement period. They choose from a wide range of activities such as: sports leadership; upcycling; ‘bake off’ and many more.
