  • Maths Lesson

The Mathematics department provides students with relevant and challenging mathematics. Students will become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

Staff use a wide range of teaching and learning strategies to ensure all types of learners’ needs are met. Students will be consistently challenged in order to maximise their true potential.

Regular intervention is common in the department both within lessons and outside.  Revision classes, booster sessions and small group work are just some of the things offered to ensure students maximise their potential. Teachers are also available to support students before and after school.

Key Stage 3

Throughout Key Stage 3 (Years 7 and 8), students build upon the foundations of mathematics covered at Primary school. Lessons are planned to develop fluency, reasoning and problem solving, in line with the National Curriculum. The six key branches of mathematics covered are:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Ratio and Proportion
  • Geometry
  • Probability
  • Statistics

Students are assessed regularly through a series of bitesize assessments which allow gaps in knowledge to be identified and subsequently resolved.

Key Stage 4

Students begin their GCSE course at the start of Year 9 and will build on the content, knowledge and skills developed at Key Stage 3. We follow the Edexcel 1MA1 course and students will be entered for either higher or foundation tier with the following grades being available:

Higher                                Grades 9 to 4

Foundation                         Grades 5 to 1

Throughout the course students will study:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Geometry and Measures
  • Statistics and Probability
  • Ratio
  • Proportion and Rates of Change
