Y12 & Y13 Beauty Therapy Professional Qualifications

Over two years students will complete a year of underpinning beauty specialist skills completed by a full level 3 qualification specialising in massage/holistic therapy techniques.  As well as theory covering all treatments students will also study anatomy & physiology and business skills. They will also work in the school’s realistic salon environments working on real paying customers.

Y12  VTCT – Level 2 – Diploma in Beauty Specialist Techniques (VRQ)

The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Specialist Techniques is a substantial vocational qualification for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed beautician/beauty specialist. This qualification is based on the beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's leading professional bodies (The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) and the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a junior beautician/beauty specialist. 

This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16-19 age group, and will develop the knowledge skills to prepare learners for employment as a junior beautician/beauty specialist. Learners will have their beauty therapy skills assessed in a realistic working environment.

This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior beautician/beauty specialist including:

  • Health & safety
  • Client care
  • Reception and salon duties
  • Facial & skin Analysis
  • Removal of hair using waxing techniques
  • Applying make-up
  • Instructing on make-up application
  • Eyelash and eyebrow treatments
  • Spray and manual tanning techniques
  • Gel nail application
  • Business skills

Career opportunities exist in a variety of contexts as a junior beautician / beauty specialist, including:

  • Commercial beauty salons
  • Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings 

Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare learners for employment as a junior beautician/beauty specialist, learners may choose to develop their skills further by undertaking further qualifications at Level 3.

Assessment is carried out via assignments, external exams and practical assessments.

Y13 – VTCT Level 3 Beauty Therapy Certificate in Beauty Therapy Studies (Massage Route)

The VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Beauty Therapy Studies (Massage) is a technical level qualification that provides learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work as a massage therapist either as an employee or in a self-employed capacity. This qualification is based on Habia National Occupational Standards (NOS). This qualification is recognised by the UK's largest beauty and complementary therapy trade body/professional association i.e. The Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) and also the UK's second largest association representing beauty and complementary therapy employers; the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a massage therapist.

This qualification has specifically been designed for the 16-19 age group and builds on existing knowledge and understanding of beauty therapy gained at Level 2, enabling learners to expand the scope of their technical skills to prepare learners for employment in beauty salons, spas and other businesses or as a self-employed massage therapist.

  • Body massage
  • Indian head massage
  • Hot stone massage
  • Pre blend aromatherapy massage
  • Effective business and marketing skills

As well as these units students will be encouraged to study a wide range of health and well-being areas to enhance their overall knowledge including holistic therapies and nutrition.
