German Exchange 2026: A Week of Culture, Friendship and Discovery

From 6-13 October, 2026, a group of Gosforth Academy students enjoyed an unforgettable visit to our partner school, Elisabeth-von-Thadden Schule in Heidelberg, Germany. The exchange was supported by the UK-German Connection and provided a wonderful opportunity for students to immerse themselves in German language and culture while building lasting friendships with their host families and exchange partners.

Throughout the week, students stayed with local host families, giving them a real insight into everyday life in Germany. They quickly became part of family life, practising their German and experiencing the warmth and hospitality of their hosts. Students loved the chance to try authentic German cuisine, with Schnitzel, fresh pretzels and delicious pastries proving especially popular favourites.

The programme was packed with exciting visits and activities. Students explored the fascinating shared cultural and scientific heritage of the region through visits to Karlsruhe Zoo, the ZKM Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe and Experimenta in Heilbronn, Germany’s largest interactive science centre. These visits encouraged students to think creatively, engage with science and technology, and develop a deeper understanding of German culture.

One of the highlights of the week was a memorable boat trip on the River Neckar from Heidelberg to Neckarsteinach. During the journey, students took part in a lively Taskmaster-style challenge, collaborating in mixed German and British teams to compete in a range of imaginative tasks. This was followed by a scenic woodland walk to Dilsberg, where students were rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

The weekend provided further opportunities for cultural immersion, with host families organising a wide range of individual activities. These included attending a Bundesliga match between Hoffenheim and Hamburg, a day trip across the border into France, and visits to the science and technology museums in Mannheim and Sinsheim. For many students, a visit to Heidelberg Castle and a walk along the city's famous Philosophers' Way were also highlights of the weekend.

A particularly significant part of the visit was the day spent at the Elisabeth-von-Thadden Schule, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Students attended lessons with their exchange partners and gained valuable insights into the German education system. Students also completed a diary of the exchange in German with the help of their exchange partners.

Ms Schneider, Teacher of German and Exchange Coordinator, commented:

“The exchange was a fantastic opportunity for our students to develop their German, experience life with their host families and make new friendships. Working closely with their German partners, they collaborated on activities, shared ideas and gained a real insight into each other’s cultures. From attending lessons and exploring the region to visiting museums and science centres, they created memories that will last a lifetime. We are incredibly grateful to our partner school and host families for making the week such a success.”
