Gosforth Academy is proud to celebrate another year of outstanding A Level and Vocational results. Our students have achieved exceptional outcomes, securing places at top universities, prestigious apprenticeships, and exciting employment opportunities.

The atmosphere this morning was filled with joy and relief as students collected their results. Today marks the end of their school journey, and their success reflects sustained determination and resilience.

Headline Results:

Average A Level Grade: B

Average Vocational Grade: Distinction

Over one-third of entries were awarded A* or A grades

83% of entries achieved grades A*- C

70 students attained an average grade of A or above

We are incredibly proud of all our students. While it’s never easy to highlight individuals among so many successes, the following examples showcase the breadth of achievement and the diverse destinations our Sixth Form students are now heading towards.

Meredith Sweenie, Antonia Stewart, Awwab Osman, Lea Mouille, Safa Jaafar, Mawa Jaafar, Nour Isreb, Belal Mansour, Amos Collin, and Ryan Cockett all achieved a clean sweep of A* grades, which is an exceptional accomplishment.

A third of our Sixth Form cohort join us from other schools, including Elliot Dyer, who enrolled in 2023. Elliot achieved an impressive set of results, A*A*A in Fine Art, Photography, and Film Studies and will now progress to an Art Foundation course.

Leo Turnbull achieved an A*AB and will begin an apprenticeship with HSBC.

Finn Milner earned A*AA and has secured a software apprenticeship with Enigma Interactive, the first of its kind offered by the company.

Principal Preit Chahal shared his pride:

“We are incredibly proud of our students and all they have achieved today. While the overall school results are among the best we’ve ever had, our greatest satisfaction comes from knowing that the vast majority of students have secured the outcomes they need to reach their chosen destinations, which is always our top priority.

One of the key reasons for our sustained success in the Sixth Form is the strong partnership between staff and families, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported our students. I wish all of them the very best for the future and encourage them to stay in touch.”

Pupils from Gosforth Academy and Great Park Academy have just returned from a highly successful German exchange trip to Heidelberg, Germany. This year marked a significant milestone for the exchange, as Great Park Academy participated for the first time, joining Gosforth Academy, which has proudly upheld this enriching collaboration for nearly three decades.

For an entire week, our pupils had the invaluable opportunity to fully immerse themselves in German language and culture. They stayed with host families from the Elisabeth-von-Thadden-Schule in Heidelberg, gaining firsthand experience of German daily life and attending a German school day.

Beyond the classroom and family life, the exchange offered a packed itinerary of cultural and educational excursions. Pupils explored Germany's largest interactive science centre, the Experimenta in Heilbronn, and delved into the world of media art at the ZKM Centre for Digital Art in Karlsruhe. A trip to the zoo provided a fun way to learn the names of animals in German.

Adventure was also on the agenda! After a sunny boat trip down the River Neckar, pupils embarked on a challenging hike up a steep hill to the impressive fortress of Dilsberg. This historical site offered a perfect opportunity to compare it to Dunstanburgh Castle, which pupils visited during the first leg of the exchange back in October.

A highlight of the trip involved a collaborative project where pupils, working with their German exchange partners, produced fantastic videos interviewing each other about their daily lives in each other's language. It was truly inspiring to witness the confidence with which our pupils began to use German outside the traditional classroom setting.

What Our Staff Had To Say:

"Participating in the German exchange for the first time has been an incredible experience for our Great Park Academy pupils," commented Ms Khalid, Curriculum Leader for MFL at Great Park Academy. "They've not only significantly improved their language skills but also gained a deeper understanding of German culture and forged lasting friendships. We're thrilled to be part of this long-standing tradition."

Ms Schneider, German-Exchange Coordinator at Gosforth Academy, added, "It was wonderful to see the collaboration between Gosforth and Great Park Academy pupils flourish. The exchange continues to be a cornerstone of our MFL department, providing an unparalleled opportunity for our students to develop their linguistic abilities and global awareness. The confidence they gained in speaking German was truly remarkable."

Congratulations to Gosforth Academy students Alex Hasenfuss and Jack Rutter, who received an Anthea Bell Prize commendation for their creative translation of a German novel extract into English.

Over 22,000 students participated in this competition for young translators in 2025, which is run by Oxford University’s Queens’ College. Almost 5,000 entries were judged by a panel of professional translators and academics. The judges commented on the very high standard of entries this year, and remarked that it was extremely hard to choose winners and commendations. This is a great achievement for Alex and Jack, whose translations struck the right balance between creativity and accuracy. Well done!

The names of the 2025 Anthea Bell Prize winners and commendees will be published on the Oxford University Queen’s College website in due course: https://www.queens.ox.ac.uk/research-at-queens/translation-exchange/anthea-bell-prize/anthea-bell-prize-past-editions/

A Level German students were in for a treat when Christian Wheeldon, Gosforth Academy’s librarian and author of “Deep Distance: The Musical Life of Manuel Göttsching”, delivered a talk on “Krautrock Music” in its historical context. Mr Wheeldon inspired students with his passion and knowledge of the origins of this revolutionary psychedelic rock and electronic music after the Second Word War, and its influence on today’s music.

The first cohort of German A-level students to learn about Mr Wheeldon’s book on Manuel Göttsching were so enthusiastic about his session that - for the third year running - students have been asking for Mr Wheeldon to come to enrich their German learning journey as well.

German teacher Angelika Schneider commented: “Mr Wheeldon is not only an outstanding librarian who always ensures that Gosforth Academy’s library is stocked with interesting books to accompany and enhance our curriculum, but he is also a thought-provoking author and expert of a unique musical genre that is relevant to the German A-level course. His session is also a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn about the process involved in writing a book and a great inspiration for their own individual research projects which they will have to present at the end of their course.”

As we prepare for the upcoming academic year, it's time to ensure that all students are ready with their school uniforms. Here’s everything you need to know about ordering your uniform and why it's crucial not to delay.

Why Order Early?

Avoid Last-Minute Rush: Ordering early means you won't be caught in the last-minute scramble. This ensures you have everything you need well before the first day of school. Our approved supplier, Michael Sehgal & Sons Ltd, recommends you place your order before the 1st of July.

Guaranteed Availability: Popular sizes and items can sell out quickly. By ordering now, you guarantee that you get the right sizes and styles.

Our first Duke of Edinburgh expedition of 2025 took place over the weekend of May 9th to 11th, involving a group of twenty-eight Year 12 students who camped, hiked, and learned navigation skills along and around Hadrian’s Wall. The group was accompanied by Mr. Wilkinson, Mrs. Blackburn, and Mrs. Pattison, and they were fortunate to enjoy fine, sunny weather throughout the entire weekend.

This year, we have more students than ever participating in the Silver Award. Since our first expedition, additional practice expedition groups have taken place this month with Miss Cassidy, Mr. Peacock, and Mr. Catton.

Once students complete their practice expeditions, they will need to undertake their assessed expeditions in the more challenging terrain of the Borrowdale Valley in the Lake District.

Both staff and students are hoping for continued good weather. In the Lake District, students will be required to independently navigate their route from one camp to another, as well as camp and cook for themselves for three days.

We are grateful to John and Caroline of Adventure Training North East, who organise and assess all our Silver Award expeditions.

Dylan Gibson, one of our Post 16 Tutors, was presented with a High Sheriff of Northumberland Award last month. Dylan, who received the award on behalf of his karate club, Kokoro Karate Club, lost his sight just over two years ago. Despite his sight loss, Dylan continues to run the karate club five nights a week in Cramlington and Blyth, alongside his sister, Gemma.

This is the second year in a row that the club has received a High Sheriff Award. Last year, Dylan was also awarded the High Sheriff’s Special Recognition Award.

This year’s award was presented by Lucia Bridgeman, the High Sheriff of Northumberland and television presenter Alexander Armstrong, who was born and raised in Rothbury.

Kokoro Karate Club received the award in recognition of great and valuable services to the community. The award also recognises the appreciation of the residents and the people of Northumberland for the activities the club promotes and the contribution it makes to enhancing the life of the community.

During his speech, Alexander Armstrong talked about the cultural heritage of Northumberland and the importance of building a strong community. He also praised all of the groups receiving awards for the enrichment activities they deliver and the opportunities they offer to young people.

The High Sheriff said, ‘Kokoto Karate Club exemplifies what dedication and teamwork can create. I cannot find the words to express how impressed I was by Dylan and how he has coped with overcoming the loss of his sight with such fortitude. It would have been easy for him to turn his back on the sport that he participated in at such a high level but instead he has dedicated himself to encouraging others to take part in karate and sharing his passion for the sport.’

These sentiments are ones we would echo, as Dylan has continued in his role as an exceptional Post 16 Tutor, supporting the students in his care with their academic and pastoral needs.

This prestigious accolade is given to schools that show a strong commitment to supporting students in making informed decisions about their futures.

Preit Chahal, our Principal, commented, “We are dedicated to enhancing the opportunities and prospects for all our students.

On a misty evening on Thursday 20th March in Wallsend, a group of young lads showed great resilience and determination in replicating what Newcastle United recently achieved—becoming League Cup champions. Our Gosforth boys came up against a physically strong Walbottle side, and after just five minutes, they found themselves 1–0 down. It felt like the potential start of a parade of goals, but the Year 9 boys regrouped and pulled a goal back within minutes.

The momentum didn’t last long, however, as Walbottle quickly regained the lead. A bit battered and slightly bruised, the boys didn’t give up. A penalty decision went in our favour, and with nerves set aside, we levelled the score at 2-2 going into half-time.

Historically, the Year 9 Gosforth boys team performs better as games progress—their skill and togetherness outweigh their tiredness. During the break, all they needed was a simple reminder of that. Once they stepped back onto the pitch, they dominated and rightly went ahead for the first time, making it 3–2 to Gosforth.

Time stood still as both teams battled for control, with equal chances to level or extend the lead. Gosforth struck the crossbar twice, drawing sighs of relief from Walbottle fans and cheers of encouragement from the travelling Gosforth supporters.

Sport has an amazing ability to create moments that define character. When Walbottle scored to level the game with only minutes remaining, it was the grit, fortitude, and strength of the Gosforth players that kept hope alive. After a tense period of extra time, the match was to be decided by a penalty shootout.

As each player bravely stepped up and made the long walk to the spot, the remaining boys huddled together, filled with both excitement and nerves. Both Gosforth’s and Walbottle’s first penalties were converted. Gosforth then scored their second, while Walbottle’s shot was met by a brilliant save from our goalkeeper. Gosforth scored again, giving us a 3–1 lead. Walbottle missed their third attempt, leaving the Gosforth captain to step forward proudly, surrounded by the roars of his teammates. He calmly scored the final goal—one that symbolised all the hard work, passion, and dedication that had brought the team to this incredible moment.

Congratulations to all players!

Leo is an incredibly talented computer science student who first came to prominence in 2020/21 when in year 9.

During the lockdown, Leo developed a digital advent calendar app as an alternative to buying a physical one. The app, which was downloaded over a thousand times, helped to reduce plastic waste and raised money for the charity Mind. The student received recognition from the then UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, commending his work in helping others in the community.

Leo is in Year 13 and preparing for his forthcoming A Level exams five years later. The student took some time out from his studies to give an insight into his progress at Gosforth Academy...

How has your educational journey progressed since you first showed your creative passion in main school?

In the last few years, my education has developed my creativity in a practical way. I really enjoy subjects that let me build and create, whether that is designing solutions through programming or learning to link sources in 3D design.

A Levels have pushed me to think in a more fluid way, allowing me to experiment and find new approaches. Every challenge in 3D design or computer science has been a way to turn ideas into something that actually works.

What initiatives have you undertaken outside of school that showcase your knowledge, skills, and passion?

Since designing my advent calendar during Covid, I’ve continued to learn by working on websites for local high-street businesses like Corsaro and Yumlush to build their online presence. Each project has helped me to improve my skills while also contributing to the community.

I also run a coding club at a local primary school each year, teaching children the basics of programming. It has been great for my own understanding, while also learning how to break down complex ideas for others.

How do you see your career progressing following A Levels?

I plan to do a software engineering degree apprenticeship, where I can get working experience while learning. This path makes the most sense for me, as I have always enjoyed practical tasks. Hopefully, this will set me up to work on software that helps people and has real impact.

What do you see Leo Turnbull working as in 10 years' time?

In 10 years, I see myself as a software engineer whose work addresses ordinary problems. This would allow me to apply my skills and genuinely improve people’s lives. I see every project as a chance to learn and make a positive impact - that's why I am drawn to this career!

Leo revealed his latest project design for Yumlush, stating he was excited to see people's responses in the coming months!

Deputy Principal for Curriculum, Mr Peter Snowdon, said:
"I am delighted to acknowledge Leo for his exceptional hard work and determination in pursuing his passion for computer design. His dedication to his work is truly inspiring, and his innovative projects have consistently demonstrated his remarkable talent. Moreover, Leo's caring nature shines through in his efforts to improve the Gosforth community and support local businesses. His commitment to making a positive impact is a testament to his character. I have no doubt that he has a bright and successful future ahead of him."

On Saturday, 1st March, five Year 9 students took part in a public speaking competition in the prestigious Ryton Festival (a speech and drama festival which has been running for 80 years). Students worked exceptionally hard, over a period of months, researching, writing and honing a speech about a topic of their choice, covering subjects as diverse as mental health in young men, the inequality between men and women in sports, the dangers of alcohol, foibles in the English language, and misunderstandings about autism. Their speeches were, without exception, well-researched, cleverly structured, and eloquently written - demonstrating true passion and belief in the importance of their topics.

Students took to the stage in a busy town hall, performing to an audience of strangers and judges - and excelled. Indeed, the lead judge commented on what a privilege it had been to hear their thoughts and opinions presented so well. All students were very highly commended and represented Gosforth Academy very well indeed - but particular congratulations are due to Emma Hughes, who won first place with her speech about the pressure of unrealistic beauty standards, and Matilda Kinnaird, who won second place with her speech about the perils of alcohol.

The full list of students who took part, and their speech topics, are below:

Emma Hughes (first prize): Teenage Beauty Standards

A few weeks ago, 20 Gosforth Academy students participated in a Spanish exchange programme with Colegio Romareda, our partner school in Zaragoza, Aragón. During the week-long stay, the Gosforth Academy students were hosted by the families of their Spanish counterparts, attended various school lessons, and engaged in several cultural activities. One highlight of the trip was a full-day excursion to Jaca in the Spanish Pyrenees, where students had the chance to go ice skating.

Our exchange programme offers an incredible opportunity for students to immerse themselves in Spanish culture and enhance their language skills rapidly.

We look forward to welcoming Colegio Romareda students to Gosforth at the end of March.

Congratulations to our Post 16 students who managed to attain that all important grade 4 or above in English, after their re-sit examination in November.

Almost 60% of our resit cohort, which included students who joined us from other schools for Sixth Form, as well as our own former Year 11 students, managed to secure a standard pass grade. Five students were even awarded a grade 5 or strong pass, which meant they had improved by two grades on their summer result.

We were delighted that, on average, our re-sit English Language students increased their original grade by almost a grade on average – no mean feat while studying for this alongside Level 3 courses!

Many thanks to all the Year 13 parents who completed our survey after their review appointments with Post 16 personal tutors. The results of this survey were overwhelmingly positive, with 98% of parents saying their child is happy and feels safe in the Sixth Form.

Almost all parents (94%) agreed that the school has high expectations for their child, with 96% agreeing that their child does well at the school and 94% agreeing that they are kept up to date with their child’s progress, with 95% saying they are kept up to date with what their child is studying. This last figure is remarkably high, compared to Year 12 parents, which may reflect that fact that Year 13 have already had their parents’ evening this school year, while the Year 12 one is not until next month.

98% agreed that there is a good range of post 16 subjects and extra-curricular activities for students. Surprisingly, only 86% agreed that the school supports students’ wider development beyond taught qualifications, through things like progression activities, tutorials, assemblies, citizenship and the registration programme. This is a lower percentage than in the Year 12 survey, perhaps a reflection of the fact that Year 13 students don’t have a weekly timetabled citizenship session and more tutorials are devoted to UCAS completion in the autumn term. This is something we can look at for next year, although students do report that they appreciate the tutorial time that is devoted to supporting them with their university applications. As an aside, we have sent off 306 UCAS applications by the deadline this year, showing that university progression still significantly dominates our students’ progression plans. Parents are reminded that students receive fortnightly progression notices, advertising a wide range of progression opportunities, including apprenticeship provider and workplace activities, and parents are copied into these updates too via School Comms.

Only a tiny number of parents felt the questions regarding the effectiveness with which the school deals with bullying and supports students with SEND needs were relevant to their own children, but of those that did respond, most were happy with the support. Finally, only 8 parents out of a year group of well over 300 said they wouldn’t recommend the school to others.

Almost all parents (98%) agreed that the school has high expectations for their child and 97% agreed that they are kept up to date with their child’s progress.

Gosforth Academy has been named one of the Top 200 Sports Schools nationally based on its performance in several sporting competitions. The top 200 chart celebrates the best of the best, with state schools battling it out with their independent rivals on the same list. And the list rates performance above everything else, with results compiled from more than 20 sports and more than 120 events. Schools usually have to reach the later stages of at least two, three or four national competitions to make the list.

This year, Gosforth Academy was ranked 80th in the country for sports performance, which is down to students excelling across a range of sports, including netball, football, basketball, athletics, badminton, squash and Rugby Sevens. This position puts us in the top 2% of schools nationally!

Congratulations must go to all the students who have represented teams over the years, and, of course, a huge thanks to all colleagues who run teams and give up their time so generously. We look forward to another successful year of sport culminating in our end of year Sports Awards Evening on Wednesday 2nd July 2025.

The academy is seeking nominations to fill one parent place on the Academy Advisory Group (AAG). The term of office will be for a period of four years. This AAG serves Gosforth Academy, which is within the Gosforth Group Multi Academy Trust (MAT).

AAG members are volunteers from a wide variety of backgrounds, who have an interest in children’s education in their local community. Advisory Groups act as a critical friend to the Principal on matters of academy performance, education, behaviour, attendance and staff performance.

As a Parent/Carer Academy Advisor, you have an opportunity to take a full and active part in the work of the Advisory Group. However, it is important to understand that you would be a representative of the whole parent body and not representing the parent body or any particular group of parents. As such you will not have a mandate or a specific constituency

The nomination process

Please find below a nomination form. When submitting nominations, the following points should be noted:

To be eligible to take part in the nomination / election process, an individual must be included on the Gosforth Academy’s admissions register as being the parent or carer of a child currently attending the school.

You can put yourself forward by completing the attached nomination form and by asking a parent/carer of another child currently at the school to second your nomination. You should also complete the personal statement. All nominations (including the personal statement) must be returned to Joy Davison, PA to the Principal, Main Reception, Gosforth Academy, Knightsbridge, Great North Road, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE3 2HJ by 09:00am on Monday 20th January 2025.

People who are bankrupt or have criminal convictions may not serve as school Academy Advisors. These and the other circumstances disqualifying individuals from holding office as AAG members are set out in full in the Trust's Articles of Association. Further information is available from Steph North, Head of Governance and Compliance at the Gosforth Group on steph.north@gosforthgroup.org.uk

Additional useful information

The structure of the Academy Advisory Group consists of:

2 Parent Members

5 Community Members

2 Staff Members

2 ex-officios – (Gosforth Group CEO and Principal)

Students from Gosforth Academy have been spreading festive joy by performing Christmas carols in the local community.

The school choir, string, and brass ensembles delighted audiences at Gosforth Shopping Centre and Newcastle’s Grainger Market.

Leader of Teaching & Learning in Music, Elaine Elliott, expressed her pride in the students: “I’m so proud of the students; they have worked really hard which their performances reflect. They are a credit to themselves, the school and their community".

Members of the public were equally enthusiastic, with Caroline Tompkins commenting, “It's brilliant to see all the different music groups performing in the community at Christmas".

The performances were a great opportunity for the students to showcase their musical talents while bringing the spirit of Christmas to Gosforth Shopping Centre and the Grainger Market.

Gosforth Academy is thrilled to continue fostering such connections through music, and looks forward to more performances in the future.

Well done to all the students involved for spreading joy this festive season!
