We are thrilled to announce that Gosforth Academy has been awarded the prestigious International School Award by the British Council in recognition of the work done to bring the world into the classroom. This award highlights our efforts to incorporate a global perspective into our classrooms and the learning experiences.
The International School Award celebrates schools that excel in international education. The British Council emphasises the importance of integrating an international dimension into the curriculum, enabling young people to develop the cultural understanding and skills necessary for success in today’s world.
At Gosforth Academy, we have built strong partnerships with schools in various countries, including France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan and China. These relationships provide our students with the opportunity to visit these countries and immerse themselves in their culture and language. Beyond the trips abroad Gosforth Academy enhance student's cultural capital through their curriculum including a weekly quiz in form time covering current affairs and a comprehensive PSHCE and Assembly programme.
Upon receiving the news of the award, our Principal, Preit Chahal, said: "Gosforth Academy is a diverse community with over 30 different first languages spoken across our student population. We are extremely proud of our commitment to developing internationalism driven by our Languages Department but complemented by the curriculum in many other departments too. We know the benefits of opening up our students minds about what is going on across the globe and in some cases providing that first hand experience of life in another country. We feel this is an important part of the curriculum to create well-rounded students and are delighted that our work in this area has been recognised at such a high level."
Shannon West, Head of UK Schools for the British Council, said: “Gosforth Academy’s international work has earned the school well-deserved recognition with the British Council International School Award - Intermediate Certificate.
We are proud and delighted to work with this great school. Many thanks to everyone for all their commitment to developing international work and sharing excellent classroom practice and resources. This is enriching education for its pupils, and their excellent collaborative projects with partner schools overseas are bringing the world into their classrooms. International work is key support for developing skills young people need to be globally aware citizens of the future.”
We are delighted to have been given this award which acknowledges our dedication to fostering global perspectives in education and our ongoing commitment to enriching students’ learning experiences through international collaboration and cultural engagement.
