Update from our Sixth Form French Exchange Trip

Our Sixth Form students recently returned from an unforgettable French exchange to Gap, where they had the opportunity to develop their language skills while experiencing everyday life in France. Surrounded by the stunning mountains of the Hautes-Alpes, Gap provided an inspiring setting for a week packed with new experiences, challenges and achievements.

Living with host families was a key part of the exchange and one of the most rewarding aspects for our students. From ordering food in the school canteen to chatting with their host families in the evenings, students used French in real-life situations every day. While this felt daunting at first, confidence quickly grew, and many students were surprised by how much they were able to understand and say by the end of the week. Attending a local ice hockey match, enjoyed with great enthusiasm by the people of Gap, gave students a memorable insight into local culture.

Students also spent time in French schools, where they were able to compare lessons, school life and teaching styles with their own experiences in the UK. They worked in local primary schools, helping to deliver simple language lessons and sharing aspects of British culture, including life in Newcastle and traditional foods. Taking on this responsibility helped students build confidence and communication skills, and they particularly enjoyed seeing how enthusiastic the younger pupils were.

The exchange offered students far more than an opportunity to practise French. It helped them grow in independence, step outside their comfort zones and form new friendships, while gaining a deeper understanding of life in another country. It was a hugely positive experience that many students described as a highlight of their time in Sixth Form so far!
