Boys Year 10 Football Team Crowned as East League Champions!

On a rare sunny afternoon in Walker, our school truly shone as the Year 10 boys’ football team brought their league season to a remarkable close. Not only were they crowned East League champions, but they also went on to become Regional champions, lifting the historic Exhibition Cup, one of the oldest trophies in the competition, dating back to 1933.

In competitive sport, reaching the top is an incredible achievement, but staying there is even harder. After a hugely successful Year 9 campaign (cup winners), the team began September with a clear goal: to build on that success. It was no easy task. The league format leaves no room for error, with just seven schools competing and matches lasting only 30 minutes (15 minutes each half). Every second counts, and even a single goal conceded can be difficult to recover from. Draws, too, can have a significant impact on league standings.

However, none of this phased the team. This season, they were unstoppable. In the league campaign, they outscored every opponent, netting 20 goals without conceding a single one. This dominant performance secured them the East League title and a place in the regional finals.

In the semi-final, they faced a strong Walbottle side in what proved to be their toughest match of the season. After a closely contested game, the result was decided by penalties, where the team held their nerve to win 4–3. The final saw them take on St Cuthbert’s in another intense 30-minute match to determine the region’s best team. Regardless of the outcome, as a coach, I was proud of the team’s unity, determination, and support for one another, which was clear to see. These values truly define great teams and incredible people. In the end, their efforts were rewarded with a fantastic 3–1 victory, sealing their place as Regional champions.

The journey isn’t over yet. The team now looks ahead to further challenges, as they compete in the semi-finals of the City Cup and the final of the County Cup. Exciting opportunities to continue an already outstanding season.
